Bringing the cultural diversity of India to the fore

Hi everyone,

My name is Meit Shah and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Environmental Biotechnology with the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences at the Hawthorn campus as an international student.

Upon commencing my studies at Swinburne, I joined the Swinburne Punjabi Association where I have focused on bringing the cultural diversity of India to the fore. Since joining the association, I have held the positions of event organiser and treasurer and I now act as a mentor for the Swinburne Punjabi Club.

This year I have been responsible for organising celebrations of Indian festivals such as Holi and Vaisakhi, a live telecast of the Cricket World Cup, the Swinburne cricket premiere league and the after exam party.

I have also been involved with the development of international students at Swinburne, representing this student cohort by being one of the student representatives on Swinburne’s Academic Board in 2010, as well as the international student representative within the Swinburne Student Union.

Currently I am president of the Swinburne Punjabi club, Indian cultural Association and also a Swinburne Student Counsellor.

Outside Swinburne, I am actively involved with other social clubs and communities. I am also an event organiser and choreographer of the Indian Gujarati Folk dance known as ‘Garba’. Through this, I have had the opportunity to choreograph and perform at Federation Square, Melbourne Airport, Victorian parliament and many international student-related functions at Swinburne since 2008.
