A time to rethink your options for 2012

Swinburne will host a Change of Preference Expo on Tuesday 20 December to give year-12 leavers an opportunity to find out more about Swinburne courses or for current students to find out how to progress to a higher level course.

Janelle Hansen assists prospective students looking at applying to Swinburne. With five campuses across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Swinburne offers various levels of higher education courses which she says gives students a wide range of choices and flexibility even once they have enrolled.

Janelle says that it is difficult for some people to determine what they want to do later on in life, but most careers can be approached in a number of ways, and it’s important that students look at all the study options available to them.

“Choosing a university that offers pathways enables students to start in a certificate or diploma course and transfer to a higher qualification at a later date,” she said.

Josh Collins didn’t receive the marks he had hoped for at the end of year 12 so decided to do the Diploma of International Business at Swinburne. After completion he transferred into the Bachelor of Commerce (Entrepreneurship and Innovation).

“When I transferred my course over I had all of my prior diploma study credited - I only had to complete one and half years of the degree to finish,” he said.

“By completing the diploma first I had a huge advantage over other students as it provided me the practical foundation which then helped me to apply the theory.”

During his time at Swinburne Josh received a scholarship to complete a three week study tour of India and China, and later this month he will be heading to Ireland on a study exchange.

Swinburne’s pathways ensure that students gain the maximum benefit from their previous studies. Whether they are a current student or have come from another institution, credit transfer pathways are in place to help them enter the right course at the appropriate level.

Swinburne also offers a variety of career-focussed courses and prepares students for their future through programs such as Industry-Based Learning (IBL).

Mark Katugampola chose to study a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Psychophysiology) at Swinburne and secured a 12 month IBL placement this year at the Royal Children’s Hospital, in the Department of Respiratory Medicine.

Mark’s IBL placement allowed him to combine the academic component of his studies with practical experience, and develop additional key skills relevant to a broader real work context.

“My IBL year gave me the opportunity to gain practical experience in the health care sector - with this experience, my career aspirations are a lot more defined,” he said.

Those who are still undecided about their course selections for next year can attend the Expo held at the Hawthorn and Lilydale campuses on Tuesday 20 December from 3.00pm -7.00pm. Students and parents will have an opportunity to speak with course representatives, attend information sessions or take a campus tour.

Swinburne will be running several other events throughout the Change of Preference period; details can be viewed on the Swinburne website.
